Pop art followed the modernist movements in continuing to disrupt the understood notion of what art was. Pop art followed the abstract expressionist period and rebelled against the esoteric expressionist vocabulary. Painted in 1967, David Hockney’s A Bigger Splash is an enormous celebration of sunny Los Angeles. Measuring almost 2.5 meters tall and wide, the painting portrays a modern-looking building, palm trees, a diving board, an ominous splash, and an empty chair. With its clean style and lack of any human presence, the piece forces us to reflect on who – or what – is inhabiting the SPACE FOUR ZERO piece. The work is comprised of illustrations of his favourite childhood soup, set in 32 posters, using synthetic polymer paint on canvass.

Pop Sculpture

Many contemporary Pop Artists continue to keep the movement not just alive but thriving. Popular Pop artists today include the likes of Neo-Pop artist Jeff Koons, the iconic Alex Katz and the immersive, Japanese visual artist Yayoi Kusama.
